Rejecting Aggression

Rejecting Aggression

Two months, two invasions. When will we learn that violence is no longer a viable option? In MLK's speech "Remaining Awake through a Great Revolution," he said, "All I'm saying is simply this: that all mankind is tied together; all life is interrelated, and we are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny." How did Ignorance, Fear, and Greed become so powerful, so in control of our future? It is the antithesis of what is a tenant of most major religions:

Buddhism: Ahimsa — Do no harm
Christianity: “Blessed are the peacemakers.” (Matthew 5:9)
Hinduism: See the Divine in all beings.
Islam: “If anyone kills a person… it is as if he has killed all mankind.” (Qur’an 5:32)
Judaism: Shalom means peace

This, however, isn't what I wanted to write about. There are things to celebrate! It is our 14th Anniversary. This is the year of the Fire Horse. Tomorrow is the Full Lunar Eclipse which will reach its totality on 3/3 at 3:33 am. So many cyclical, celestial, auspicious events which allow for introspection and contemplation about our time and space in the Universe. These are the things on which I want my energy and attention to focus.

Happy Birthday Buddhamouse! In this final year of my stewardship, I will endeavor to keep up with the rapid unfolding events that the Year of the Fire Horse promises. May our transitions and evolutions be meaningful and as awe-inspiring as witnessing the shadow of the earth on our natural orbiting satellite. Finally, beginning and ending with the thoughts of MLK, let us strive for "a proactive commitment to love, justice, and the rejection of aggression."

For the benefit of all beings...
